Chettinad’s villages are a case in point that India holds in it such great diversity even in the smallest corner of the country. Of course, the massive Chola temples (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) is what first comes to mind when you think of Chettinad. But this, and much more awaits in the quiet villages of the region. Palatial homes with Burma teak doors, murals, colourful tiles and airy courtyards are the hallmark of the region. Some, so wonderfully restores as heritage hotels, that you must park yourself nowhere else when exploring the region. Once in the comfortable cocoon of the erstwhile home of Chettiar businessmen, open your eyes to the awe-inspiring colours and designs that are a part of these homes. The décor and interiors represent what the region is famous for – handmade floor tiles of Athangudi, woven handiwork of artisans, and antiques that were once part of homes.
