Property Overview

Living amidst the ancient Aravallis

Rural Rajasthan holds a great charm for those who want to tread a slightly offbeat path and explore more than just the grand palaces, cenotaphs and bustling bright markets of the state. Not to say that those don’t hold a valid place in the tourist’s mind, but this is something else. Rawla Narlai – halfway between Udaipur and Jodhpur- is an excellent stop to pace your journey and experience countryside living in the state. Slowly becoming a well-known boutique hotel in Rajasthan, the property was the country manor of Jodhpur royalty in the 13th century. It was refurbished to its original glory and opened to guests to experience what living in royal Rajasthan meant – even if you were not exactly the King.

The Aravallis make a magnificent backdrop to the 17th century heritage property, especially a large granite hillock with discreet temples in its coves and a large white stone elephant at its peak. Exploring this and the villages around is exciting for city-breds. The towns of Kumbalgarh, Ranakpur as well as the Rajsamand Lake are also close by for a day trip. When not stepping out, there is the swimming pool area to colonize the whole day.

The boutique rooms of Rawla Narlai are exquisite with a melding of traditional and modern. There are two wings - the original centuries’ old manor and a newer wing with rooms that have a modern touch but in tune with the character of the manor.  Old murals, stained glass windows and Rajasthani furnishings make the rooms colourful, while modern amenities don’t evade any comforts. The lookouts in the rooms and common areas are the most coveted spots in the property for views of the untouched countryside around.

The culinary experience, complete with white-gloved hospitality (though everyone belongs to the local community), is memorable with local flavours and smiles. But for the best seats in the house, ask for a special dining set up that overlooks the entire mansion and the large granite rock that is the mascot of the property.

Rawla Narlai’s highlight lies in the exquisite experiences curated for the guest. Amongst these are the stepwell dinner, a private campfire, safaris on horsebacks and a visit to the nearby villages to see local life at close quarters. Needless to say, the fascinating Kumbalgarh Fort and Ranakpur temples are on everyone’s list.
